MGM GRAND DETROIT TEAM MEMBERS PRESENT CHECK FOR ALMOST $218,000 TO AREA ORGANIZATIONS
DETROIT – November 28, 2007 - Team members at MGM Grand Detroit today presented a check for nearly $218,000 to Detroit area community organizations and charities including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Haven, Inc., among others.
The entire amount was raised by team members from MGM Grand Detroit as part of the company’s MGM MIRAGE Voice Foundation, which focuses team members’ charitable contributions to non-profit agencies and organizations within the local community.
Voice Foundation funds are generated through several fundraisers, such as the annual MGM Detroit team member golf outing; book, nut and candy sales; along with team member payroll contributions. MGM MIRAGE, parent company to MGM Grand Detroit, absorbs the administrative costs of the program, allowing 100 percent of contributions to go directly to the organizations.
“What makes this program unique is that the money is raised not by MGM Grand Detroit as a corporation, but by our team members directly; they decide what organizations should receive the funds, and how much to allocate to the cause,” said George Boyer, president and chief operating officer of MGM Grand Detroit. “Our team members embrace the Voice Foundation and are proud of the impact they can make on our great community. Each time they attend a fundraiser or make a payroll contribution, they know they are directly helping their neighbors and others in the area.”
Grants are awarded based on the decisions of the Community Voice Council (CVC), a team of employees representing each MGM MIRAGE property who review grant proposals from local nonprofits and determine which agencies will receive financial support from Voice. At MGM Grand Detroit, the eight team members of the CVC range from line to supervisory team members.
“We review a number of factors before we make any decision as to whom will receive Voice funds,” says Kiera Teall, a slot technician who serves on the CVC Board. “Are they already receiving help from one of our programs, how in need are they and the people they’re trying to help, and what impact will our contribution make? There are many organizations and individuals who need assistance in our community, but we’re glad we can help.”
This marks the sixth consecutive year that the MGM Grand Detroit Voice Foundation has contributed money to area charities and community organizations. To date, team members have donated approximately $894,000. That figure does not include sponsorships and other donations that MGM Grand Detroit has contributed separately.
Since the inception of the Voice Foundation in 2002, MGM MIRAGE employees have raised an amazing $24 million. $6.2 million was raised in 2007 alone. Their donations are improving the quality of life for more than 300,000 people in our local communities.
